The Le Mars Community School system is a fully accredited school district.
The district includes four K-5 elementary buildings, one 6-8 middle school, and one 9-12 high school. The 2002-03 student enrollment in grades K-12 is over 2,300 students. The certified staff numbers at 160.
The district has implemented all day every day kindergarten programming, and is committed to lowering class size at the elementary grades. The middle school’s mission statement of "meeting the needs of young adolescents" is being accomplished through the implementation of the middle school concept.
The comprehensive high school offers a full range of academic, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities in which our students have experienced a great deal of success over the years.
The district provides a hot lunch program, transportation for rural students and a low cost shuttle system for in-town students, and a support staff of counselors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, speech and hearing specialists.
Gehlen Catholic School is a single campus offering preschool through 12th grade. Gehlen Catholic is a fully accredited system by both the State of Iowa and the Diocese of Sioux City. Gehlen Catholic provides a quality academic, faith, and co-curricular education founded in the school’s century old principles of “faith, values, service and academic excellence.”
Supported by investments from parishes, alumni, parents, and development, Gehlen Catholic’s mission is “to promote openness to God, to provide a quality education and to instill Catholic values in a caring, challenging and prayerful environment.”
For the sixth straight year in a row, Gehlen Catholic’s enrollment has grown. 9% of Gehlen Catholic’s student body is comprised of non-Catholic children. Growing enrollment has also led to an increase in Gehlen Catholic’s staffing. Currently, Gehlen Catholic has 46 experienced education professionals and 17 support staff.
The curriculum offers daily instruction in both core curriculum and religion. Specialized instruction students are offered in many areas including honors classes, advanced math and science, technology, physical education, journalism, vocal and instrumental music, and art. Individual needs of students are addressed through the Success Center (resource room), talented and gifted enrichment activities, and a variety of clubs and organizations from TK through 12.
Students, staff, parents, and alumni are involved in a variety of local and international service projects. Service projects include fall service day, Advent gift bags for nursing home residents and shut-ins, collections for Christian Needs Center and Mission Honduras, Then Feed Just One (formerly Kids Against Hunger), hosting community-wide Veteran’s Day and 9/11 Prayer Services, and requests from local service groups and organizations. Collections are also taken up for international missions around the world, as well as victims of international catastrophes.
Services of a school nurse, breakfast and hot lunch program, and elementary and high school counselors. Additional specialized services are offered to students on the Gehlen Catholic campus through efforts coordinated with the Northwest Area Education Association. Transportation is available through LeMars Community for rural students and a low cost shuttle system for in-town students.
